Share a Folium or Leaflet map as a link

Folium saves an interactive map as one HTML file, and a hand-written Leaflet map is one page. Upload the file and send a link that opens the map, with zoom, pan and popups, in any browser.

An interactive map made in Python or by hand usually ends up as a .html file on your laptop. Emailed as an attachment, it often arrives as a download or as raw code on a phone, and some mail systems block HTML attachments outright. Why HTML files don’t open from email explains the reasons. A hosted link opens the map directly.

Save a Folium map as HTML

  • ✓Build the map as usual, then call m.save("map.html") on the folium.Map object.
  • ✓Markers, popups, layer controls and GeoJSON layers you added are written into that one file.
  • ✓The file loads the Leaflet library from a public CDN and the map tiles from the tile provider, so it needs an internet connection to display, locally or hosted.

A Leaflet map you wrote yourself

A Leaflet page that loads Leaflet from a CDN and keeps its data inside the page is already a single file. If it fetches a separate .geojson file by a relative path, paste the data into the page as a JavaScript variable instead, or the uploaded page will not find it. Making an HTML file self-contained covers the general case.

Exports that write a whole folder of scripts, styles and data, such as the qgis2web plugin for QGIS, produce many linked files. Those need a host that serves a folder, not a single-file link.

Upload it and send the link

Drag the .html file onto the FileShare Pro dashboard and copy the link. The map is served as a web page, so zoom, pan, popups and layer toggles work as they do on your machine.

Viewers need no account and nothing to install. Shared pages carry a noindex tag, so a map of site visits or client locations does not appear in search results. On Pro you can add a password: password-protecting an HTML page.

Watch the file size

Folium embeds GeoJSON in the file, so a detailed boundary layer can make the map large and slow to open on a phone. Simplifying the geometry before adding it, for example with GeoPandas’ simplify(), keeps the file small. The free plan accepts files up to 100 MB.

Update the map without a new link

When the data changes, save the map again and upload the new file over the old one. The link stays the same and the previous version is kept in history. Updating a shared link without changing it has the details.

Turn on comments and readers can leave a note on the page after typing a name, such as a location that is missing or a boundary that looks wrong. The view count shows whether the person you sent it to has opened it.

Frequently asked

How do I share a Folium map with someone?

Save it with m.save("map.html"), upload the file to a host that serves it as a web page, and send the link. The person opens it in a browser with no Python needed.

Does the shared map stay interactive?

Yes. Zoom, pan, popups and layer controls run in the viewer’s browser, the same as when you open the file locally.

Why does my uploaded Leaflet map show tiles but no data?

The page probably loads a separate .geojson file by a relative path. Put the data inside the page, or host the whole folder.

Can I update the map without sending a new link?

Yes. Upload the new file over the old one. The link stays the same and the previous version is kept in history.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan hosts up to 50 files of up to 100 MB each, with view counts and comments included. Password-protected links are on Pro.
